Holding on to Trust

Today as I write this post, my 92-year old mother is facing hip surgery. She fell last week and ended up in the hospital with excruciating pain. The outcome is undetermined: whether she’ll make it through the surgery; and if she does, whether the surgery will even be successful.

When I spoke to her last night on the phone, her voice slurry and faint from the drugs, she kept repeating: “God is with us.” She said, “Even if we feel abandoned, God is with us, like the footprints in the sand.”

I could feel her tears in the silence over the phone, while I wiped away my tears streaming down my face. What faith we are asked to have in the face of mystery, in the face of all the unknowns of life. But I hear the words of my 92-year old mother so loud and clear: God is with us. I will hold on to those words as this day unfolds, my stomach in knots, and my heart heavy.

I invite us all to pray today, for all those who are facing uncertainty, for all those having medical procedures, and for their anxious families. Let us pray today, holding on with trust and praying for an increase of faith that “God is with us.”
