The Tender Love of Mercy

Wednesday Wisdom: The Tender Love of Mercy.

Can we have mercy for ourselves? I am just not myself these days. I am disoriented, as I try and accept the change that has taken place with my elderly mother, and as a result with my relationship with her. She fell a few weeks ago, had emergency surgery for a partial hip replacement, is now in a rehab center to try and regain some mobility, and will move into assisted living at the end of the month. My sisters have cleared out her house, packed boxes, given away clothes and books, and this chapter of our lives is over.

In less than three weeks, the way I’ve known my mother, and related to my mother, and the home I shared with her is gone. And I’m trying to grasp the change. It’s unfamiliar; it’s unknown. I face my loss, my fears, and my grief. I’m disoriented. I need mercy.

By the tender mercy of our God,
the dawn from on high will break upon us,
to give light to those who sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.
–Luke 1 78-79

The mercy of God is tender, and I open myself up to receive this tender love. I trust that light will break through as I sit in this darkness, I pray that God will show me the way through this passage, into the way of peace.

I ask the Spirit for mercy, and for help to be strong and faithful, and tender with my sad heart.

Do you need to call out for mercy today, and feel the tender love of God embracing you?
